Technology and safety

The study will look at the following three domains:

  1. Hydrogen supply, demand and storage.
  2. Legal and financial prerequisites.
  3. Required technology and safety requirements.

This page will describe the approach for the required technology and the safety requirements.

The key question here is whether the existing natural gas network is suitable for reuse for hydrogen transport and storage. The study will therefore investigate how existing infrastructure can be safely used for hydrogen transport and storage. This involves aspects such as physical suitability of existing pipelines and storage facilities, identifying which components are missing (e.g. required compression), modelling the infrastructure (capacity and security of supply) and operation/maintenance of the infrastructure.

In order to map out the technology and safety-related aspects in full, a chain approach will be used. The functional and physical requirements for both the low-pressure network (regional) and the high-pressure network (national) will therefore be included in the study.
